  • US To Hold Trade Talks with Taiwan In A Move Blasted By China

As per the recent news, US trade officials have visited Taiwan to start off four days of negotiations over a proposed trade arrangement that has drawn resistance from the People’s Republic of China.

The meeting which is scheduled between US and Taiwanese negotiators in Taipei marks the first formal discussion over a text of a trade agreement after a beginning round of meetings in November. The discussion will be focused on proposed deals covering anti-corruption standards, trade by SMEs, administrative practices, and trade assistance.

As the U.S. and Taiwan agree in some of these areas, the two sides may declare independent arrangements regarding those subjects for what Taiwanese authorities called an “early harvest” as momentum works towards an extensive trade agreement. These two areas that have demonstrated more challenges between the US and Taiwan are - agriculture & digital trade which are likely to take longer to discuss.

The potential trade agreement between Taiwan and the US has disturbed Chinese authorities, a representative for the Chinese Embassy blamed Americans for “wrongdoings” by even arranging the deal, as per reported.

  • ADB Signs Supply Chain Finance Deal With Bank of Georgia

The latest news says the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a supply chain finance deal with the Bank of Georgia to share around 50% of its risks related to supply chain finance transactions with the main purpose of strengthening financing and reducing supply chain management risks for SMEs.

As per ADB, this is the very first time it has signed such a type of arrangement, which will bring two institutions together to determine a risk-sharing program for avoiding the risks of corporate non-payment in supply chain finance transactions.

Steven Beck, head of the ADB’s trade and supply chain finance program (TSCFP) stated, “This deal expands our trade finance partnership with the Bank of Georgia that started in 2011 and will be stimulant in growing supply chain finance in the area.”

  • Things To Keep In Mind While Choosing a Letter Of Credit

What Is A Letter Of Credit

A letter of credit is a legal, written document that guarantees the buyer’s timely & full-fledged payment to the sellers. The buyer’s bank issues it to compensate the seller if the buyer defaults or cannot pay the seller. In such cases, the bank covers the full or remaining amount on behalf of the buyer.

In other words, an international letter of credit service is a legally-binding finance instrument issued by a bank or trade finance institution to ensure on-time payments for the goods received on behalf of the buyer. It is also known as a Documentary Credit, where if any buyer fails to perform their due obligation, the bank pays the seller on behalf of the buyer, who then repays the bank later.

Issuance of a letter of credit helps reduce the payment failure risk for the seller as it shifts from the buyer to the bank. On the other hand, it also allows the buyer to make an early payment to the seller, improving his credibility in the market.

  • Which Is A Better Choice - A Letter Of Credit Or Bank Guarantee

Letters of Credit and Bank Guarantees are the two most commonly used trade finance instruments in an international trade deal. Both are issued by a bank or legal financial institution to mitigate the payment risks between the parties as well as to safeguard the parties’ interests. Both demonstrate that the buyer/importer will pay the beneficiary/seller/exporter on time. In case, if the buyer is unable to do so, the issuing bank will step in and take the charge for the same. But they work slightly in different ways in different situations.

    Letters of Credit

Also known as a documentary credit, or payment guarantee letter, an international letter of credit service is a legal document issued by the buyer’s bank or financial institution to the seller’s bank. It is a confirming document that assures that the payment will be made to the seller by the buyer once the terms & conditions mentioned in the LC agreement are fulfilled by both parties. But in case of the buyer defaulting, the issuing bank will compensate. Read our comprehensive guide on letter of credit.

    Bank Guarantee

A Bank guarantee is also a legal contract where the issuing bank is committed to paying the beneficiary on behalf of its applicant i.e. buyer as per the terms & conditions of the BG contract. But the issuing bank will only enter when the buyer defaults or fails to make the payment. In simple words, it protects against non-performance. Know the types of BG.
