The first thing to understand is the TDS of water. TDS is the Total Dissolved Solids in the water. These dissolved solids include inorganic salts such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium. They also include organic matter.

The TDs of water vary with the water and its origin. When the water source flows over rocks with a high deposition of salts, the water will pick up the salts and carry them with its flow. Therefore the TDS of water varies from source to source. Packaged water has a controlled level of TDS. Excess TDS levels are reduced using the reverse osmosis system.

There are no rules against drinking water with a high TDS content. The problem is that such water has a flat taste, does not satisfy the thirst, and feels unsatisfactory.

Generally, TDs levels above 500 mg/l are not really good. They may or may not affect health. But their taste degrades. The higher the TDS level of water, the worse the taste. And if this water is used for cooking, then they don't blend in with the articles being cooked. And while drinking high TDS water is not forbidden by anyone, it is better to avoid it. The organic after levels are high, and no one knows what this organic matter consists of. This may consist of micro-ingredients which might affect the body. A lower TDS means less organic matter; it is theoretically better and safer.

The generally accepted indications for a safe TDS of water are as follows -

Keeping this table in mind, it is clear that a certain level of TDS is desirable and safe. This is 300 mg/l and lower. It is important to keep in mind that at the lower end, the TDS must not be below 100 mg/l. This also destroys the flavour of the water. Therefore anything between 300 mg/l to 100 mg/l is the best TDS of water. 

Packaged water which reputed companies produce, has controlled amounts of TDS. They generally keep it just below the 300 mg/l level. This is a very good TDS of water. The companies get rid of the excess TDS by the reverse osmosis process, which reduces the TDS content in water.

While there is no ban against drinking water with a high TDS, it is just not advisable. A TDS in the range of 300 or lower is considered the best option. It is advised that water with a good TDS level be consumed for safety for various reasons. There is the matter of inorganic salts. A high TDS means that a larger amount of such salts are in the water. Too much of any salt is certainly not beneficial. Then there is the organic matter which is involved. This also large ion doses is not advisable. A balance is required. Therefore the best TDS of water is between 300 mg/l and 100 mg/. Anything lower is tasteless, and anything higher too is hard water and equally tasteless. When buying package water, check the TDS levels that the company states are in the water. If the container does not tell you, check their website to see what they say. Make sure that the water you consume has the right TDS. It is important to get the correct TDS of water for you and your family.
