When I told my daughter Camilla, who was 14 at the time, that I was going to start blogging, I was met with a spontaneous and cash reaction. "If you do, I'm moving." My daughter imagined bloggers as synonymous with so-called "pink bloggers", those who write and post pictures about fashion, training, makeup, interiors, and such. I explained to Camilla that I was not going to blog about makeup tips, but that I was going to create a website to write about what I work with: communication of research and professional knowledge. So a very nerdy subject blog. I still took the chance to launch the blog. Five years ago I published a handbook on research communication. The book, which is still on sale, has several chapters on knowledge sharing in social media, with an emphasis on blogging.

I want to live as I learn. If you are going to advise others about blogging, you need to feel it in your fingers. You can not just read up and then talk and write about it. You have to do it. So I had to become a blogger.

At the book launch, I dropped the news that I was also going to launch a blog with August 29, 2013, as the launch date. The online edition of Forskerforum covered the book launch and posted the URL of my blog on their website. Then there was no going back.

Writing for blog

Here are some preliminary thoughts on writing for a professional blog. I want to experiment with blog writing as a separate writing genre in the future. Not all experiments will be equally successful. Then I'm glad you're talking. And then I also hope some of the experiments turn out better. Nice if you say so too. Fun if together we can develop a writing genre that readers like.

• Lower your shoulders. Find your casual style. Writing for a blog is something other than writing reports and professional articles. Take off your suit and dress language, and find your cuddly suit language. You should not impress researchers and experts, you should engage and interest readers. Try to write like this when you talk to people outside your area of ​​expertise. An oral, informal writing style helps you to move from professional language to human language.
• What's your story? You need to have something to write about that might be relevant and interesting to your readers. How can you make your message interesting to the readers of your blog?
• Write for the readers. Use simple and understandable language. Try to avoid using special technical terms and another tribal language. When using technical terms, you need to explain to them so that your dream reader understands you. Avoid using abbreviations. Use your blog to develop your writing style and the narrator’s voice. It will help you stand out from other professional bloggers. Do not be afraid to let your commitment and passion for the subject shine through the text.
• Write as you speak. Once you have written a draft blog post, you can try to read it aloud to yourself. Feel free to take audio recordings and listen to the recording. How do you think it works? Is it possible to write it even easier and more comprehensible without it being at the expense of important nuances?
• Feel free to use "I" as the narrator's voice instead of "man", "one" or "we". It makes the text more vivid and engaging,
• Do not be afraid to write yourself into the story. Feel free to use examples and episodes you have experienced that can illustrate your post. Feel free to use pictorial language. You can develop images in the reader by, for example, starting with «Imagine…» or «Think about…». You can be personal without being (too) private).
• Take the chance to post "thoughts along the way" in the form of a bit rough raw texts. Invite readers to comment and comment. It will be able to give you input that you can use when refining the text further. If the text appears too polished when you post it, it takes a little more for the reader to contribute their views and comments.
• Talk to your readers. Imagine that your blog is an invitation to dialogue with your readers. Then you need to be curious about your readers and think about what they can contribute. You also need to read and think about what they write.
