Will Class 12th Results Matter In The Era Of CUET?
While the introduction of the CUET (Central University Entrance Test) was a welcomed change for several applicants who can now apply for a large set of universities using just one test, it will drastically impact the existing convention and importance of the board exams. With many students scoring near-perfect scores this year, the results seem to have less significance due to the new mode of central university admissions through the CUET test.
The exam has seen a mixed response till now with many finding it inadequate in assessing a candidate's critical thinking/writing (the test is based on multiple choice questions). Many also feel that the test adds to the importance of coaching or private tutoring which goes against the idea of increasing access to higher education in the country. Several toppers have also raised objections to the new format claiming that it adds to the uncertainty in admissions to top colleges.
Many education experts however argue that the exam continues to test fundamental knowledge from the NCERT textbooks and allows the testing authorities to adapt to the latest patterns easily. The exam in this sense replaces the decades-old method of central university admissions which was approaching a point of unrealistic cut-offs and lack of transparency.
