  • Jeffrey Wigand
The main objective of the following research paper is to discuss the biography of Jeffrey Wigand and his contribution to business ethics and moral evaluation. Wigand was a central figure of the tobacco wars in the great social chronicle (Brenner n.pag.).
Jeffrey Wigand worked on the development of reduced-harm cigarettes while being a vice president of the development and research company known as Brown & Jeffreyson. Wigand went down in history as “The Insider” by revealing the awful truth about tobacco companies (“Jeffrey Wigand” n.pag.).
Wigand was born in New York, in 1942, and gained a reputation of tobacco industry whistleblower in the 1990’s. Actually, this was a result of his active position against the policy of tobacco companies. Wigand revealed the information, which was hidden by manufactures. The truth was that cigarettes cause addiction and are the main reason for lung cancer.
Jeffrey Wigand, a hero for many people and tobacco industry whistleblower, was the eldest child in the Bronx family of five. The family was Catholic, and the upbringing methods were quite strict. When Wigand grew up, his family moved to Pleasant Valley, near New York. Jeffrey dreamed to become a doctor and even worked as a scrub nurse. Just after one year of college studies, he dropped out and joined the United States Air Force. Then Jeffrey was assigned to the mission in Asia and when he came back, he received a doctorate and married a legal secretary. Years later, Wigand got very high positions in health industry, but was soon tempted by money. Naively thinking that it was a possibility to make the cigarettes safer, he joined the Brown & Jeffreyson. However, it was the first time Jeffrey faced unethical policies, which made him feel very anxious and even shocked. He could not understand how the top managers and executives dared to hide the truth from public. The ongoing questioning of the executives and their policies by Wigand led to his dismissal from work. After that, he began to work as a teacher. He initially signed a confidentiality agreement, which was broken in 1994. In the same year, Jeffrey participated in 60 Minutes program on CBS produced by Lowell Bergman. The program was about making public the awful truth about tobacco companies. In 1995, Wigand gave a testimony in the case by the state of Mississippi, which was related to the fact that tobacco companies did various tricks in order to hide the damage that cigarettes can cause. Unfortunately, such a brave deed had a negative impact on Wigand as he suffered from alcoholism, numerous death threats, divorce, and constant moral pressure (“Biography” n.pag.).
Based on the above research, it can be concluded that Jeffrey Wigand will always be one of the most famous ethical heroes in the history. His contribution to the studies of business ethics and moral evaluation is enormous as he increased the level of ethical responsibility not only between people, but also within the government. Consequently, this resulted in a more strict policy against tobacco companies and signing off the Master Settlement Agreement according to which tobacco companies paid billions to sick people (“Jeffrey Wigand. Biography” n.pag.). Jeffrey Wigand has also founded an organization known as Smoke-free Kids, which is a non-profit institution aimed at increasing tobacco usage awareness among children.

Jeffrey Wigand is a hero of ours nowadays. The way how he protects children from smoke deserves attention. This article very good example of pre written essay at https://essaysempire.com/blog/argumentative-essay-topics-list.html for your studies.
