A damaged Led motorcycle speedometer can be frustrating. The number of potential problems seems endless-hands stop working, hands rebound, odometer stops rolling, etc. The good news is that the troubleshooting part is relatively easy. Generally, you are investigating three potential problems: (1) broken or frayed cables, (2) broken Speedo drives, and (3) broken speedometers.

The first one is what you want because it is very easy to test and replace cables. First, disconnect the cable from the speedometer drive end. For those who are not familiar with the speedometer and its working principle, basically, there is only one cable extending from the back of the speedometer to the gearbox or the front rotor.

There is a "drive" unit that rotates the inside of the speedometer cable, essentially telling the speedometer how fast the bicycle is traveling.

When disconnecting the cable, you should see a metal cable wire inside the cable housing, which is "square" in shape. Grab the drill and close the chuck around the internal cables. First, make sure the internal cables look normal.

When a cable is broken, one end or the other is usually broken. Rotate the cable with an electric drill tightly wound around the internal drive cable to see if the speedometer needle moves. If it moves, then you know that it is not a cable or a speedometer, but a speedometer drive unit.

To be honest, although a damaged motorcycle speedometer usually drops to the cable first, the speedometer second, and then the drive unit. If the pointer does not move throughout the drill test, it may be the speedometer drive or the speedometer itself. Here, you need to borrow the cable from your partner and repeat the same test. If your buddy’s work cable makes the speedometer needle move, then it is your cable. If not, the speedometer itself needs to work. Similarly, if there is a spare speedometer around, you can perform the same elimination method by connecting a high-quality lcd digital speedometer to the cable. Either way, the whole idea here is a process of elimination.
