Weight watchers have long found that their weight readings will change depending on where they put the bathroom electronic scales. It is reported that just moving the electronic scale from the carpet to the ground can reduce several kilograms of weight. It was not until recently that scientists understood the reason why the bathroom carpet exerts this extra gravity, or which reading you should believe.

Jon Bonde geist and David MacKay of Cambridge University gave the answer to this question. Through testing the mechanical device of the traditional mechanical bathroom electronic scale, they found that the weighing system of the electronic scale is built on a series of supporting points connected with the bottom plate.

On a hard surface, the bottom plate is far from the ground and will bend when a person steps on the electronic scale. Then, a series of levers convert this bending degree into a reading. On the soft carpet, the bottom plate of the electronic scale cannot bend normally, resulting in wrong readings. Researchers found that errors can sometimes reach as much as 10%.

Therefore, it seems that many people who think they have weight problems are actually carpet problems. If you want to keep the carpet in the bathroom, you have two choices: to spend money on an electronic scale with different mechanical devices, or to comfort yourself, if it weren't for the damn carpet, you have reached your ideal weight.
